More Than an Office Visit

Our dentist and team recommend that you visit our office every six months for an exam and cleaning. But why are these appointments so important? Well, many reasons! A lot of people think that dental problems will always be noticeable, either through pain or a change in appearance, but that is simply not true — at least when those problems first start. Many problems are impossible to notice without experience or specialized equipment. When we catch problems early, we can treat them more easily; waiting to come into the office until you are in pain usually means the problem will require more extensive treatment.

Home Care vs. Office Care

That does not mean your home care is meaningless, though. You are just as much a part of your oral health team as our office members. When you diligently brush and floss, you can prevent a huge number of dental problems from ever becoming issues for your smile. When you come in every six months, we will check in on your home care routine and give you any tips and tricks you need to make it even better. Our team will then give your smile a deeper clean, removing bacteria and plaque that you are not able to on your own before they become bigger problems.

Care for You and Your Smile

Our care for you does not only include your smile — because your smile has an effect on so much more than just your oral health. The mouth is the gateway to the body, and that means preventing problems there can help prevent problems elsewhere in the body. Poor dental health has been linked to a number of systemic diseases and problems, including diabetes and heart disease. When you keep your smile healthy, you can better keep your overall health in a good place.

FAQ

How often do I need to see the dentist?

We recommend coming into our office every six months for your regular exam and cleaning. However, if you suffer from a specific issue for your oral health, such as gum disease, we may recommend that you come into the office more frequently. Many people who suffer from gum disease need to visit the dentist at least four times a year for deeper cleanings that help keep the disease in check. If you need further treatment, for gum disease or otherwise, you will also come into our office for that earlier rather than later.

How can I better care for my teeth at home?

There are many ways! When you come in for your regular exam and cleaning, please ask us any questions you have about your home care. We want to make sure your routine matches your oral health needs, and we will give you the best recommendations we can to make that happen.

Here are some basic tips:

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing in the morning and then right before bed is a schedule that works for many people.
  • Floss once a day, preferably right before bed. This helps keep bacteria from working on your teeth all night, protecting your oral health.
  • Use a mouthwash if you would like. While mouthwash can leave your smile feeling clean, it does not replace brushing and flossing, so make sure to keep doing those if you add mouthwash to your routine.
